Building Armamar…

Armamar in 3D

Armamar is a municipality in the district of Viseu, in the Douro sub-region, covering about 117 km² with 5,678 inhabitants according to the 2021 census, spread across 14 parishes. It lies south of the Douro river on a steep hillside and borders Peso da Régua to the north, Sabrosa to the northeast, Tabuaço to the east, Moimenta da Beira to the southeast, Tarouca to the southwest and Lamego to the west.

It calls itself the "Capital of the Mountain Apple" and is also wine country: the quintas of the municipality produce Douro wines and Port. This overview only contains information confirmed by official and tourism sources.

What to see and do

Local tourism highlights above all the viewpoints and the religious and historic heritage:

  • The Misarela viewpoint, with views of the Douro valley and the Serra do Marão and a waterfall that gives it its name.
  • Other viewpoints: Fraga da Pena, Nossa Senhora da Graça (looking towards Tarouca), Nossa Senhora da Saúde (above the Temilobos dam) and São Domingos.
  • The Folgosa walkway beside the river, suited to walking, running or cycling.
  • The parish church of São Miguel, which local tourism describes as the municipality's only national monument, and chapels such as those of the Holy Spirit, Santa Bárbara and São Lázaro.
  • The house of the poet Fausto José, the House of the Counts of Vila Flor and the Castro de Goujoim, among other sites listed by local tourism.

Apples, wine and local flavours

Fruit growing and wine-making dominate the local economy. Besides apples, Wikipedia mentions chestnuts and cherries. Tourism events in the municipality feature apple sweets, jams, juices and liqueurs. Alongside them the Douro offers its wines: visitors can combine Armamar with Port and Douro wine quintas.

When to go

The Feira da Maçã de Montanha (Mountain Apple Fair) takes place in October; according to the municipality's website, the 2026 edition is announced for 2 to 4 October. A tourist guide mentions grape-harvest festivities in the area in September. The municipal holiday is 24 June, St John's Day.
