The Igreja Matriz de Santiago is in the village of Santiago, in the parish of São Romão e Santiago, Armamar municipality, on Rua Nova da Igreja. It is the parish church of the locality that, together with São Romão, gives its name to the union of parishes created in 2013.
Santiago has a very long history: it received a charter from King Afonso Henriques in 1169, is mentioned in the inquiries of 1258 and, in the first half of the 16th century, was a place within the district of the town of Armamar. The parish history notes that its parish church was a dependency of the one in Armamar, that is, it depended on the mother church of São Miguel. The village's religious heritage also includes the chapels of Nossa Senhora das Dores and Santo António, both from the 18th century. We found no reliable source for the construction date of the present church.
It lies about 3.1 km in a straight line south of the centre of Armamar. The area is one of small-scale farming: potatoes, wine, chestnuts and cereals, with apple orchards increasingly present. No visiting hours are published.
