The Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz stands in the village of Santa Cruz, in the parish of Santa Cruz, Armamar municipality, on Rua 12 de Março. Until 30 August 1995 the locality was officially called Santa Cruz de Lumiares.
Everything suggests the old villa rustica had a temple dedicated to the Holy Cross, which gave the place its name. The parish of Santa Cruz de Lumiares is mentioned in the boundaries of the Couto de Argeriz in 1161, and the 1258 inquiries of King Afonso III confirm it as a couto of the Count of Lumiares. The parish's heritage also includes the little chapel of Nossa Senhora da Livração (1874) and, in Vila Nova, the chapels of Nossa Senhora da Saúde and Espírito Santo. The chapel of São Gregório is the focus of popular devotion: the São Gregório Fair and Pilgrimage takes place on 12 March. We found no reliable source for the date of the parish church itself.
It lies about 4.6 km in a straight line south of the centre of Armamar, in a landscape of grazing land and orchards.
