Building Lamego…

Lamego in 3D

Lamego is a municipality in Viseu district, in the Douro sub-region, covering 165.42 km² with 18 parishes and 24,315 inhabitants at the 2021 census. It borders Mesão Frio, Peso da Régua, Armamar, Tarouca, Castro Daire and Resende. The town lies in the Balsemão valley, about 10 km from Peso da Régua and about 1h30 by car from Porto.

It is a good base if you want to combine a monumental town — sanctuary, cathedral, castle, museums — with the Douro wine region on your doorstep, including sparkling-wine tastings a few kilometres away. To go deeper, read our full Lamego guide or follow the one-day walking itinerary.

What to see and do

  • The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the town's signature landmark, with a baroque stairway of 686 steps, fountains and a monolithic cross in its surroundings.
  • Lamego Cathedral is a reminder that Lamego is a diocesan seat; the municipality presents Lamego Castle together with its cistern.
  • The Lamego Museum is currently closed for renovation works (according to the official site in September 2026). The municipality also lists the Diocesan Museum and the Porta dos Figos Archaeological Centre.
  • The Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão is part of the municipality's religious heritage and is worth a trip out of the centre.
  • The Raposeira Caves offer guided visits from Tuesday to Saturday; check times and bookings with the caves.

For time outdoors, the municipality highlights the Urban Park, the Biological Park and the Mata de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios woodland.

Food and wine

According to the municipality, Lamego's table rests on roast kid, wild rabbit, cured ham and smoked sausages, plus bôlas (savoury pies with fillings such as ham, tuna or cod), Teixeira biscuits and the local "Lamegos" pastries. To drink, expect Douro wines, Port and sparkling wine, with the Raposeira caves as the local reference.

When to go

The Festas de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios take place every year between late August and early September around the sanctuary; the 2026 edition ran from 21 August to 9 September, with the Procissão de Triunfo (Triumph Procession) as its highlight. Book your stay early for those dates.

Getting there

By car from Porto via the A4, N101 and N2 it is about 1h30; from Régua it is 10 km on the N2. By train, go from Porto to Régua and continue by bus (about 15 minutes, according to our guide) or taxi.
