Lamego in One Day: A Walking Itinerary, Hour by Hour
14 Aug 2026
Lamego fits into a single day if you know where to start. The monuments in the centre are only a few hundred metres from one another; only the Santuário, the Caves da Raposeira and the Capela de Balsemão call for a short detour. This itinerary lists the stops in order, with the opening times we were able to confirm, so you don't arrive at a closed door. For the history and detail of each monument, see the complete guide to Lamego.
Before you set off: what shapes the day
- Distances (as the crow flies, from the Sé): Museum, 100 m; Castle, 350 m; Santuário dos Remédios, about 1 km; Caves da Raposeira, about 1.7 km; Capela de Balsemão, about 2.3 km (3 km by road, according to official information).
- The Museu de Lamego is closed for refurbishment works (PRR), according to the official website in September 2026. The itinerary does not include it.
- Caves da Raposeira: guided tours from Tuesday to Saturday, at 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm (bookings: +351 254 655 003 or visitas@caves-raposeira.com). The itinerary assumes a day between Tuesday and Saturday; at the end there are alternatives for Sunday and Monday.
- Sé: the official tourism portal gives opening hours of 8am to 1pm and 3pm to 7pm. Check on the spot, especially on days of celebration.
- Weekly market: if you happen to be there on a Thursday, there is a market in the town.
09:00 · Sé de Lamego
Start at the Sé (cathedral), while the town is still quiet. The tower is Romanesque up to the height of the bells, the façade has three Gothic portals worked in granite and, inside, the vaults carry the colourful paintings of Nicolau Nasoni (1737-1738). Don't miss the cloister, completed in 1557. Allow about an hour.

10:15 · Igreja de Almacave
A few streets away, the Igreja de Santa Maria de Almacave is Romanesque (12th century) and was built next to an Arab necropolis, which is where the name comes from. It is the place that tradition associates with the Cortes de Lamego of 1143, a story that historians do not confirm but that the town still tells. Twenty minutes is enough.
10:45 · Castle and Cistern
Climb up to the Castelo (castle), at the highest point of the town, at 543 metres. From the keep and the walls you can see the rivers Coura, Balsemão and Varosa. Outside the walls is the old stone cistern, reopened in 2013 as a Centro de Memória (memory centre). Then take your time walking down through the castle quarter. Allow about an hour.

12:15 · Lunch
Now is the time to try what is truly Lamego's own: presunto (cured ham), the bôla (a bread filled with presunto, cooked ham, vinha d'alhos pork or salt cod, among others) and roast kid with oven-baked rice. For something sweet, look for the biscoito da Teixeira and the "Lamegos" pastries.
2:30pm · Caves da Raposeira
The Caves da Raposeira are about 1.7 km from the centre, so it is best to go by car or taxi. Raposeira makes sparkling wine by the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle, and runs guided tours of the cellars. Choose the 2:30pm or 3:30pm tour: the last is at 4:30pm, and the end of the afternoon is for the Santuário.
17:00 · Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Leave the Santuário (sanctuary) for the end of the day. There are two ways to do it: climb the 686 steps on foot, in nine flights, passing through the Pátio dos Reis, with the Fonte dos Gigantes and an obelisk of about 15 metres; or, since there is an access road to the sanctuary, go by car and walk down the staircase, which makes the route easier. The park around it, the Mata dos Remédios, is good for a last stroll before dinner.

In the evening
Have dinner in the centre and stay the night in Lamego: see the accommodation in Lamego, from hotels in the historic centre to quintas (country estates) on the outskirts.
What if you are not going between Tuesday and Saturday?
- Sunday: the Caves da Raposeira have no guided tours. Swap them for the Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão (3 km), which, according to the Cultura Portugal portal, is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 6pm, and closes on some public holidays, including Lamego's municipal holiday (8 September).
- Monday: the Caves and the Chapel are closed, as is the Museum. Make the most of the urban walking routes "Lamego Histórico" and "Lamego Monumental", which start from the Loja Interativa de Turismo (Interactive Tourism Shop), and the Parque Isidoro Guedes.
- Only half a day: Sé, Castle and Santuário.
- Two days: add the Capela de Balsemão, the Convento de Ferreirim (8 km) and a visit to a quinta; see the complete guide.
If your visit is in September
The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios fill the town from the end of August to mid-September, with the main day on 8 September. At these dates it is wise to book accommodation in advance; see the pilgrimage guide.
