The Casa dos Pinheiros de Aragão is a manor house from the end of the 17th century on Rua Marquês de Pombal in Lamego, opposite the Igreja da Graça, in the Douro Valley. It belonged to the Pinheiro de Aragão family, housed the town's secondary school and is one of Lamego's armorial houses, with a coat of arms over its main gate.
One house, several lives
The building was built at the end of the 17th century for the Pinheiro de Aragão family. In 1885 João Pinheiro de Aragão leased it to the Lamego council to house the secondary school, and the council only bought it outright in 1892. The school stayed until 1936, when it moved to new premises and the manor returned to the council. Later it quartered the Public Security Police.
The coat of arms and present use
The stone arms over the main gate combine four lineages: the Aragões in the first quarter, the Pinheiros in the second, the Salzedas in the third and the Pintos in the fourth. Today the building houses a day centre for older people (APITIL) and municipal technical services, so it is mostly seen from outside. Opposite stands the Igreja da Graça, which shares the street.
