Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão

The Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão stands on the outskirts of Lamego, on a small plain beside the Balsemão river, a tributary of the Varosa. It is one of the rare examples of pre-Romanesque architecture in Portugal and is classified as a national monument.

A debated chronology

The date of construction is still discussed. One view favours the Visigothic period (6th-7th centuries), supported by a stone slab dated 588; another proposes the Asturian expansion period (9th-10th centuries), citing features such as the medallion (clípeo) and Asturian crosses. The Cultura Portugal portal mentions 10th-century traces of Iberian Mozarabic building techniques, and a Roman villa may once have stood here, as Roman stones with inscriptions were reused in the walls.

What to see

• The basilical plan with three naves, separated by three horseshoe arches on reused Roman Corinthian capitals, ending in a rectangular apse.
• The cylindrical columns, the triumphal arch and the imposts decorated with geometric and cord motifs, which Wikipedia describes as an exceptional ornamental group on the Iberian Peninsula.
• The Gothic sarcophagus of D. Afonso Pires, Bishop of Porto, who chose this chapel as his burial place in the 14th century and had works carried out here.

Today the building is integrated into a 17th-century manor house; the major works of that century, linked to Luís Pinto de Sousa Coutinho, gave it its present appearance, including the southern entrance, monumentalised with inscribed stones and a staircase.

Visiting

According to the Cultura Portugal portal, the chapel is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00, and closed on 1 January, 1 May, Easter Sunday, 8 September (Lamego's municipal holiday) and 25 December; admission is free. Always confirm the hours locally or with the managing body, as they may change.
