The Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão, just over 3 km from central Lamego, is one of the rare examples of early medieval architecture in Portugal. Its date is debated: it has been placed either in the Visigothic period (6th-7th centuries) or in the period of expansion of the Kingdom of Asturias (9th-10th centuries).
From the original building survives the plan of three naves, separated by semi-horseshoe arches on reused Roman Corinthian capitals. The chapel was altered in the 17th century and has Baroque and Mannerist elements. It also holds a Gothic tomb.
