The Parque Biológico da Serra das Meadas is a municipal park of about 50 hectares, some 7 km from Lamego, in the Serra das Meadas, in the Douro Valley. It is a centre for environmental education and nature conservation, where you can see native and domestic animals and join guided visits.
Origins and purpose
The land was formerly a nursery of the Direção-Geral de Florestas. The park was created by the Câmara Municipal de Lamego on common land ceded by the parish councils of Almacave and Avões under a protocol, as a partnership with the Associação para o Desenvolvimento do Vale do Douro and with support from the EU LEADER II programme. The average altitude is around 1,000 metres, varying between 955 and 1,004 metres, according to the municipal regulation.
The regulation describes it as a centre for environmental education and the preservation of nature and its biodiversity. It houses native fauna, some in captivity and some free-living, and unrecoverable protected animals ceded by the ICNF, used to make visitors aware of species extinction.
What you can see
According to a tourist guide, the park holds birds of prey, owls, foxes, deer, fallow deer, donkeys, horses, ducks, geese, herons and peacocks. There is also an auditorium for training and environmental education, educational services, a bar and toilets.
If you head up to the mountain you can combine the visit with the city: the Castelo de Lamego and the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios are in the town of Lamego.
