The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, crowning the Penude hill in Lamego, is one of Northern Portugal's great Baroque monuments and one of the country's most important pilgrimage centres. Its monumental stairway of 686 steps, adorned with azulejo tiles, fountains and allegorical statues, is among the most impressive in the genre — comparable to Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga.
The stairway was built between the 18th and early 19th century, forming a sacred open-air art trail. Every September, the Sanctuary hosts one of Portugal's largest pilgrimages, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees over ten days.
