Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Lamego
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios stands above Lamego, at the top of a monumental stairway that has become the city's defining image.
The sanctuary was designed in 1750 by António Mendes Coutinho. Earlier, in 1738-1739, Nicolau Nasoni — the architect who shaped northern Portuguese baroque — had drawn the Fonte dos Remédios for the Pátio dos Reis.
Work on the stairway began in 1777 and was only completed in the twentieth century. The Pátio dos Reis, with its statues and Nasoni's fountain, is the grandest stage of the climb.
