Caves da Raposeira

Lamego

About this Place

Caves da Raposeira, located at Quinta da Raposeira in Távora, a few kilometres from Lamego, is Portugal's oldest and most emblematic sparkling wine producer. Founded in 1898 by Real Companhia Velha — one of the world's oldest wine houses — Raposeira produces espumante (sparkling wine) by the traditional method (méthode champenoise), with secondary bottle fermentation and ageing in granite-hewn underground cellars.

History and Production Method

Sparkling wine production in Lamego benefits from unique conditions: altitude of 500–700 metres, granite and schist soils, and a continental climate with marked temperature swings that preserve natural grape acidity. The grape varieties used include Malvasia Fina, Bical, Cerceal and Chardonnay, vinified separately before blending.

The cellars extend for more than 2 km of subterranean galleries carved into granite rock, where temperature stays constant at 12–14°C year-round — essential for the slow, classical-method ageing process. Hundreds of thousands of bottles rest on traditional wooden pupitres (riddling racks), awaiting remuage (riddling) and dégorgement (disgorgement).

Tours and Tastings

The guided cellar tour includes a walk through the galleries, a detailed explanation of the production process and a tasting of two Raposeira expressions. The Super Reserva, Reserva and Brut ranges are available. Advance booking is recommended. The on-site shop stocks the complete range.
