Caves da Raposeira

Caves da Raposeira stands at Lugar da Raposeira in Lamego. It is a sparkling wine house working in the classic method, the traditional process of France's Champagne region. According to its official website, the company is more than 120 years old.

The story goes back to 1898, when the Valle family founded the cellars after a visit to Champagne, with the aim of bringing the Champagne technique to the Lamego region. The official website also notes that the reputation of wines from this region dates back to the 16th century.

How the sparkling wine is made

In the classic method, the second fermentation takes place in the bottle itself. The cellars' website lists remuage, dégorgement and liqueur dosage as stages of the process, closely followed by the oenologists. A press feature on the house also mentions recent technology investments, such as gyropalettes, machines that automate the turning of the bottles.

Visiting the cellars

Raposeira runs guided tours of the cellars that explain the production techniques and finish in a tasting room, with a shop. According to the official website, tours run Tuesday to Saturday at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30; always confirm the times and book directly with the cellars.
