The Arquivo-Museu Diocesano de Lamego is housed in the Casa do Poço, a manor house in the historic centre of Lamego, in the Douro Valley. It belongs to the Diocese of Lamego, opened in 2008 as a museum and archive, and presents exhibitions, mainly of religious art, along with the diocese's historical records.

The Casa do Poço and its history

The building was the home of the Morgado do Poço family. The Diocese of Lamego bought the manor in 1920 and, after major restoration work, inaugurated it in 2008 as a diocesan museum and archive. Since then it has hosted several exhibitions, most of them of religious art.

What the collection holds

Most of the diocese's documentary heritage is still kept at the current Episcopal Palace, but it is gradually being transferred to the Arquivo-Museu. Items the diocese highlights on its page include a fragment of the statutes of the Confraria de S. João Evangelista from the Convento das Chagas (Lamego, 1620), the petition to the bishop to confirm them, 20th-century photographs such as the visit of the Fátima image to the diocese in 1950, and an 1888 invoice for office supplies for the Cabido, from Porto.

Do not confuse it with the Museu de Lamego, a separate institution housed in the former episcopal palace. For anyone interested in the city's religious history, the Sé de Lamego is a natural complement.
