Frequently asked questions about the Douro wine region
The best time to visit the Douro is between May and October. The grape harvest takes place in September and October and is a unique experience. Spring brings green, flowering landscapes, while summer is ideal for cruises on the Douro river.
The Douro offers a wide range of places to stay, from luxury hotels overlooking the river to traditional wine estates that make their own wine. The most popular areas include Peso da Régua, Pinhão, Lamego and Vila Real.
In the Douro Valley you can taste Port wine and DOC Douro wines, take river cruises, visit centuries-old wine estates, walk trails through the terraced vineyards and enjoy the regional cuisine.
The Douro can be reached by car (the A4 motorway from Porto, about 1h30), by train (the Douro Line, one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Europe) or by boat (cruises from Porto or Peso da Régua).
The Alto Douro Wine Region is a cultural landscape that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, with about 24,600 hectares of terraced vineyards and more than 2,000 years of winegrowing tradition.
The Douro is famous for Port wine (Ruby, Tawny, Vintage), DOC Douro wines and Moscatel do Douro. Native grape varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca.
