Campelo and Ovil River Area

The Campelo e Ovil River Zone, presented by the municipal tourism service as the Fraga do Rio River Leisure Zone, lies on the south bank of the Ovil river in the parish of Campelo e Ovil, in the municipality of Baião. It is a riverside leisure area within the Campelo e Ovil Forest Park.

Depending on the source, the same place appears under different names: Zona Fluvial da Fraga do Rio on the Visit Baião portal and Praia Fluvial de Ovil on the Rota do Românico website. The Rota do Românico places it about 1.5 km from Baião and lists it under Nature and Landscape.

What it offers

According to the Visit Baião portal, entry is free and the address is Rua Abel Ribeiro. The park has:

• a physical fitness circuit;
• a picnic area and a leisure area next to the Ovil river;
• a children's playground, public toilets and Wi-Fi.

The Rota do Românico states that in summer the site is supported by a bar, lifeguard supervision, changing rooms and a first-aid post. Please confirm the period in which these services run locally.

Landscape and nature

In the Forest Park you can see oak groves of Quercus pyrenaica and Quercus robur, often accompanied by sweet chestnut trees in the cooler areas. The municipal portal links the place to the PR1 Florestas Naturais walking route.

Setting

Campelo e Ovil was created in 2013 by merging the former parishes of Campelo and Ovil. According to Wikipedia it covers 31.81 km² and had 3,686 inhabitants at the 2021 census, and it is home to the Anta da Aboboreira, a national monument.
