Building Sabrosa…

Sabrosa in 3D

Sabrosa is a municipality in the district of Vila Real, in the Douro sub-region, covering about 157 km² with 5,548 inhabitants (2021 census) spread across 12 parishes. The north is a granite landscape of cereals, pine woods and cattle; the south is the Douro river, schist and vineyard terraces, part of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

It is known as the land of Fernão de Magalhães (Magellan) and of Miguel Torga, and presents itself as one of the gateways to the Douro Demarcated Region. Neighbouring municipalities include Vila Real, Peso da Régua and Tabuaço.

What to see and do

  • Espaço Miguel Torga, in São Martinho de Anta, the writer's birthplace: a literary reference centre designed by architect Souto Moura and opened in 2012, with a library, bookshop, auditorium and exhibition space.
  • Casa da Pereira, in Sabrosa: according to local tradition, this is where Fernão de Magalhães was born, the navigator who led the first voyage around the world. The evidence is not entirely certain, so this should be read as tradition.
  • Provesende: a village on the Douro wine villages route, with a pillory (pelourinho) and the church of São João Batista.
  • Viewpoints: the municipality lists several, including those of Sabrosa, São Domingos de Provesende, São Domingos do Monte Coxo (Paços), the Senhor dos Aflitos sanctuary (Torre do Pinhão) and the Miradouro Torguiano in São Cristóvão do Douro.
  • Ancient heritage: the Mamoa das Madorras, a megalithic monument, and the Baroque chapel of Nossa Senhora da Azinheira, both in the São Martinho de Anta area.
