Lamego
Lamego: Where Portugal Was Born
Lamego is one of the most captivating and underrated cities in northern Portugal. Nestled in the Balsemão valley just 10 km from Peso da Régua, Lamego carries in its stones memories that predate the Portuguese nation itself. It was here, in 1143, that the Cúria de Lamego took place — the assembly at which Afonso Henriques was acclaimed the first King of Portugal.
But Lamego is far more than history. The city has outstanding gastronomy — particularly the DOP-certified cured ham and Raposeira sparkling wine — and its famous baroque sanctuary is one of the most impressive monuments in northern Portugal.
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios defines Lamego's skyline. Its white and yellow baroque façade with twin towers can be seen from kilometres away. But the real star is the staircase: 686 granite steps on nine flights adorned with fountains, chapels, azulejo panels and granite statues depicting scenes from the New Testament — one of the greatest examples of Portuguese baroque. Climbing on foot is a contemplative experience; a side road allows access by car. At the top, a garden offers sweeping views over the city and valley.
The Romaria de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios pilgrimage takes place in September, drawing thousands of pilgrims in one of northern Portugal's most important popular celebrations.
The Cathedral of Lamego
Lamego's cathedral, with 12th-century origins, has an exquisite Manueline cloister and a museum holding panels by Grão Vasco — considered masterpieces of Iberian Renaissance painting.
The Castle
Lamego Castle dates from the 11th century. The climb through the old town rewards with a panorama over Lamego and the Balsemão valley. Access is free.
Gastronomy: Cured Ham and Sparkling Wine
Lamego DOP cured ham is air-cured for 12–18 months in the cold, dry valley air — firm in texture, white-marbled and complexly flavoured. Raposeira, Portugal's best-selling sparkling wine made by the champenoise method, can be visited with tastings a few kilometres from the city. A chilled brut Raposeira paired with Lamego ham is the gastronomic highlight of this city.
The Lamego Museum
The Museu de Lamego houses Grão Vasco panels and extraordinary 16th-century Flemish tapestries. Entry: €3 per adult. Closed Mondays.
