When to Visit Mesão Frio

Mesão Frio has a Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Spring (March–May) is a riot of colour — vines burst into leaf and estates come alive. Autumn (September–November) brings the golden hues of harvest. Winter is cold but rarely snowy — ideal for peaceful hikes with no crowds.

Culture, History and Food

The history of Mesão Frio is the history of wine. The Quinta do Rêgo and other centuries-old estates are living witnesses to a winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times. Local cuisine features slow-roasted kid goat, meat rolls and egg-based sweets perfected by Dominican nuns. White Port wine and local aguardentes are the star products.

Getting There

Mesão Frio is about 100 km from Porto and just 12 km from Peso da Régua. A car is best. By train, get off at Régua (Douro Line) and cover the last 12 km by taxi or transfer.
