Vila Real
Vila Real: Capital of Trás-os-Montes and Gateway to the Douro Superior
Vila Real is a city that most Douro Valley tourists drive past without stopping — and that is a mistake worth correcting. Capital of the homonymous district and the historic region of Trás-os-Montes, Vila Real is a university city with genuine urban life, culture and services that distinguish it from every other valley destination. Positioned 25 km north of the Douro River and 15 km northwest of Pinhão, it serves both as a practical base for exploring the Douro Superior and as an independent destination with its own substantial attractions.
The Palácio de Mateus
The Palácio de Mateus is undoubtedly Vila Real's most famous monument — and one of the most recognisable buildings in all of Portugal. Its baroque granite façade, with two symmetrical wings forming an elegant U-shape reflected in the garden's ornamental lake, was immortalised on the label of Mateus Rosé wine from 1942. Worth noting: Mateus Rosé wine is not produced here; the brand belongs to Sogrape and is made in Anadia. The palace is open to visitors with guided tours covering the original-furnished interiors, the historic wine cellar and the formal gardens. Admission costs €8–€14. The palace is 3 km from Vila Real city centre.
Serra do Alvão Natural Park
Fifteen kilometres from Vila Real, the Serra do Alvão Natural Park offers Atlantic forest, walking trails through mountain villages and the spectacular Fisga de Moledo waterfall — a 40-metre drop in unspoiled nature. The schist village of Lamas de Olo is one of northern Portugal's most beautiful mountain settlements.
The University and City Life
The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), with approximately 6,000 students, gives Vila Real a cultural and social dynamism found nowhere else in the region. The UTAD campus has botanical gardens open to the public and an experimental quinta with autochthonous vine varieties.
Trás-os-Montes Gastronomy
In Vila Real, look for the mirandesa beef steak (from an indigenous breed, simply grilled), alheira de Mirandela (the iconic smoked sausage made with poultry and spices, here at its origin), Bísaro pork products (intensely flavoured charcuterie from an indigenous pig breed) and autumn chestnuts.

FAQ
Is Mateus Rosé wine actually made at the Palácio de Mateus?
No. The wine belongs to Sogrape and is produced in Anadia. The palace lent the image of its façade to the wine label from 1942 — production and the historic property are entirely separate entities. The palace produces its own wines under the "Casa de Mateus" label.
