Museu do Douro

The Museu do Douro is the museum of the Douro Demarcated Region, housed in the Casa da Companhia Velha on Rua Marquês de Pombal in Peso da Régua. It is devoted to the heritage and history of the region and its wines, above all Port, and works well as a starting point for anyone who wants to understand the valley before exploring it.

A museum of the territory

The museum was created by the Portuguese parliament in 1997 (Law 125/97 of 2 December) and conceived as a multi-purpose, multi-site museum: it does not live in one building alone but connects with other places across the region. It is run by the Fundação Museu do Douro, set up in 2006.

The building and the permanent exhibition

The main building is the Casa da Companhia Velha, former headquarters of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, the 18th-century institution that regulated the Port wine trade. It has been a Monument of Public Interest since 2017. A short walk away stands the former Armazém 43, home to the permanent exhibition "Memória da Terra do Vinho", which covers vine growing, winemaking, the landscape and the Port estates, with rabelo boats, harvest tools and images of well-known brands.

What else there is to see and do

The main building has exhibition space, a library with a reading room, a shop, the restaurant "A Companhia" and a wine bar overlooking the River Douro. The museum shows temporary exhibitions, publishes its collections online and offers a 360º virtual visit.
