São Leonardo da Galafura Viewpoint is widely considered one of the most spectacular observation points in the entire Alto Douro Wine Region. Perched at around 500 metres above sea level in the village of Galafura, on the northern bank of the Douro, it offers a 180-degree panorama over the amphitheatre of terraced vineyards curving around the river near Peso da Régua.
The View and What to See
From the viewing platform, the layers of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro (UNESCO World Heritage) unfold clearly — the famous socalcos (terraces) built over centuries of human labour on schist and granite. In the foreground: the quintas of the southern bank; in the distance, the valley winds toward Pinhão and the Douro Superior. At sunrise and sunset, the slopes take on textures and colours that transform the landscape into an Impressionist painting.
The village of Galafura is also one of the Douro Wine Villages, preserving traditional granite and schist architecture. The small Church of São Leonardo, after which the viewpoint is named, dates from the 18th century.
Getting There
The viewpoint is about 6 km from central Peso da Régua. Follow the EN323 towards Galafura; signposted from Régua. Free parking at the viewpoint. No direct public transport — a car or taxi is recommended. Combine with the Régua Quay and Régua Station. Find accommodation in the Douro.

Sunrise and late afternoon offer the most photogenic light. In September/October, the harvest animates the quintas across the valley.
