About São João da Pesqueira

São João da Pesqueira is a town in the district of Viseu, in the Douro sub-region, and gives its name to a municipality of about 266 km² with 11 parishes. The 2021 census counted 6,775 inhabitants. It lies in the heart of the demarcated Douro region, and its culture and history are closely tied to wine production.

It borders Alijó, Sabrosa, Penedono and Sernancelhe, as well as Tabuaço to the west, Carrazeda de Ansiães to the north-east and Vila Nova de Foz Côa to the east. It makes a good base for getting to know the Douro at an easy pace, among vineyards, viewpoints and old villages.
