Building Baião…

Baião in 3D

Baião lies in the district of Porto, in the Tâmega e Sousa sub-region, between the Serra do Marão and the Douro valley. It covers about 174.5 km² and has 14 parishes; the 2021 census counted 17,534 residents. It borders Amarante, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Mesão Frio, Peso da Régua, Resende, Cinfães and Marco de Canaveses.

It is a green, hilly municipality (Wikipedia notes that more than 60% of its territory is forest), with Romanesque heritage, prehistoric remains and a connection to the writer Eça de Queirós.

What to see and do

  • Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede: by 1120 it already belonged to the Diocese of Porto and was linked to the Canons Regular of St Augustine, according to the Douro e Tâmega tourism portal. The complex, spanning the 12th to the 19th century, includes 18th-century buildings such as wine cellars, a wine press and an octagonal chapel (Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho).
  • Serra da Aboboreira: home to megalithic monuments that are thousands of years old. The Chã de Parada dolmen is described as the largest and best preserved, with red paintings on its standing stones. The route passes through parishes such as Ovil, Campelo and Teixeira.
  • Fundação Eça de Queiroz, in Santa Cruz do Douro: a non-profit institution devoted to the writer's work and to the museum of Tormes, with guided visits. Always check opening times and conditions with the foundation.
  • Casa do Lavrador, a rural and ethnographic museum with a traditional kitchen, a wine shop and a threshing floor, and the Igreja de São Tiago de Valadares, from the late 13th century, with 15th-century wall paintings, according to Rota do Douro.
  • Zona Fluvial de Campelo e Ovil: on the south bank of the Ovil river, with a forest park, a fitness circuit, a picnic area and a leisure area by the water.

Food and local products

The municipality is associated with smoked meats (fumeiro), roast lamb (anho assado) and Douro wines. Traditional products and crafts mentioned include the Biscoito da Teixeira and the walking sticks of Gestaçô. Wikipedia also mentions a smoked-meat fair and a roast-lamb festival; dates change, so check with the municipality before planning your trip.
