Penafiel River Beaches

The bathing spots of Penafiel are on the Tâmega river, not the Douro, as is sometimes written. The two most often mentioned are the Boelhe River Park and the Luzim river area, both on the right bank. On its tourism portal the municipality speaks of the "relaxing river beaches of the warm Tâmega waters".

Boelhe River Park

It lies on Rua de Várzeas, in Boelhe. The Rota do Românico describes it as a park suited to picnics and water sports, with a games field, a bar with terrace and a wide sandy area. According to Time Out, it was created by the Boelhe parish council, with works starting in 2020, covers about 10,000 m² in the Passinhos area and is known as the Parque Fluvial das Famílias (Families' River Park). It has picnic tables, a swing, barbecues, a beach football pitch, showers and toilets. NiT reports water temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees, a figure that does not come from an official source. Luzim river area

The Rota do Românico describes the Luzim river beach as a pleasant spot with a long sandy area, suited to picnics and water sports. The Aquapolis directory, which is not an official source, sees it more as a leisure area for water sports such as canoeing or jet skis than as a swimming spot, and mentions picnic tables, barbecues, toilets with showers, parking and deep water because of the Torrão dam downstream.
