Fraga do Puio Viewpoint

About this Place

The Fraga do Puio Viewpoint is one of the most spectacular observation points in the entire Trás-os-Montes Douro region. Perched on the rim of the Douro Internacional gorge, this viewpoint offers a vertiginous perspective over the schist canyon that the river carved over millions of years, with a drop of approximately 170 metres to the surface of the water far below.

The Landscape

From Fraga do Puio, the gaze sweeps across a 180-degree panorama encompassing the Portuguese side of the Douro gorge, the river's sinuous course, the schist slopes mantled in Mediterranean scrub, and across the border, the Spanish landscape of Arribes del Duero with its equally wild and grand character. On clear days, the dam structures and Spanish villages on the left bank are clearly visible.

Wildlife at the Gorge

This viewpoint is also a privileged spot for wildlife observation. The thermals rising from the gorge walls are used by griffon vultures for their spectacular soaring flights. With patience and binoculars, it is possible to observe Bonelli's eagles, peregrine falcons and black storks that nest on the cliffs.

Getting There

The viewpoint lies a few kilometres from Miranda do Douro along the road that follows the northern bank of the Douro. A short trail from the parking area leads to the gorge rim. Exercise extreme caution in unfenced areas near the cliff edge, especially with children.
