Miranda do Douro Castle

Miranda do Douro Castle is the former fortress that guarded this frontier area, in the town of Miranda do Douro. It is classified as a Property of Public Interest (Decree no. 40 361, of 20 October 1955) and today mainly preserves stretches of wall and traces of the fortification.

Much of what was lost is down to a dated event: in May 1762, during the Seven Years' War (the so-called "Guerra do Mirandum"), the powder magazine exploded while the fortress was resisting Spanish troops, taking with it sections of wall and buildings that were never rebuilt.

A little history

According to the municipality, King Dinis granted Miranda a new charter in 1286 and began works on the castle, whose reconstruction he ordered again between 1294 and 1299. In 1540 a papal bull made the settlement a diocese seat and in 1545 King João III raised it to city status. The fortification was later adapted to artillery warfare, with a reconstruction directed by Luís Xavier Bernardo in 1746.

As for the 1762 explosion, the sources consulted speak of several hundred dead, about 400 according to some, and differ on how the blast began, so only the essentials are given here.

What remains and what has been found

• The municipality describes the keep, with partly destroyed facades, the Portas da Senhora do Amparo and the Portas de Santo António, the postern and a central well with 72 steps.
• Excavations in 2005, in the north-east sector, uncovered remains of towers of the Portas de Santo António and stretches of a 16th-century barbican.
• In 2018 the Direção Regional de Cultura do Norte and the municipality began new archaeological work over a total area of about 6,000 m², as part of the wall's requalification. During archaeological monitoring of street works, seven skeletons from 1762 were exhumed, three children and four adults.

Visiting

The municipality presents the castle as a monument open to visitors. In 2024 eight QR-code panels were installed at the castle and along the wall, with on-site text in Portuguese and Mirandese and digital content in Portuguese, Mirandese, Spanish and English.
