Tabuaço is a municipality in the district of Viseu, in the Douro sub-region, with 13 parishes (freguesias) and around five thousand inhabitants (2021 census). It borders Sabrosa to the north, São João da Pesqueira to the east and Armamar to the west, and the municipal seat lies about 8 km from the Douro River.

The territory belongs to the Alto Douro Vinhateiro region, with terraced vineyards, olive groves and the valleys of tributaries such as the Távora, the Tedo and the Torto. It suits travellers looking for the Douro of wine and stone villages, with viewpoints, Romanesque churches and regional cooking.

What to see and do

  • Tabuaço town: the Museu do Imaginário Duriense (MIDU), opposite the town hall, and the Rijomax, presented as the world's most complete clock, in an interactive tourist shop. The town's pillory was rebuilt in 2001.
  • Barcos and Granja do Tedo: two villages that keep their rural and communal heritage, such as parish churches and ovens. Pillories also stand in Arcos, Sendim and Valença do Douro.
  • Religious heritage: the Romanesque monastery of São Pedro das Águias and the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sabroso, which has a picnic area.
  • Viewpoints and river: among others, those of Adorigo, Pedregal and Nossa Senhora da Conceição; beside the Távora there is the Foz do Távora river quay, for strolls and picnics.
  • Nature and ancient traces: the Natural Castles of Cabriz, three rock formations, and the Conde Ferreira garden. Wikipedia also mentions ancient finds in the municipality, such as stone axes, hand mills and Roman coins.

The municipality produces Douro and Port wines, made at quintas with traditional Douro architecture, as well as olive oil. Regional dishes mentioned by tourism sources include stuffed kid, wild boar and river fish fried in olive oil. Among the sweets, bolo-rei and folar stand out, alongside a convent pastry tradition.
