Building Resende…

Resende in 3D

Resende is a municipality in the district of Viseu, in the Tâmega e Sousa sub-region, on the south bank of the Douro river, between the river and the Serra de Montemuro. It covers about 123 km² and, according to the 2021 census, has 10,051 inhabitants spread over 11 parishes (freguesias). The municipality presents itself as a gateway to the Douro wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

It borders Baião and Mesão Frio to the north, Lamego to the east, Castro Daire to the south and Cinfães to the west. It suits travellers looking for Romanesque heritage, cherries, wood-fired regional cooking and walks between the Douro and the mountains.

What to see and do

Romanesque heritage is one of the municipality's strengths. According to the tourism sources consulted, four monuments in Resende belong to the Romanesque Route:

  • Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere, in an elevated position with views towards the Douro; its cloister is described as one of the most singular Romanesque cloisters in the region.
  • Igreja de São Martinho de Mouros, singled out within Portuguese Romanesque for the sturdiness of its tower-façade.
  • Igreja de Santa Maria de Barrô.
  • Ponte da Panchorra (Panchorra bridge).

Wikipedia also lists the Castelo de São Martinho de Mouros and the Felgueiras Megalithic Complex among the municipality's monuments. Other places of interest include Caldas de Aregos, a thermal spa which, according to recent tourism material, is being redeveloped (check its status before planning a visit), as well as Monte de São Cristóvão and Penedo de São João.

For nature, the municipality promotes walking and mountain-bike routes along the Douro and across the slopes of the Serra de Montemuro. According to local tourism promotion, spring brings cherry trees in blossom and autumn brings chestnut groves.

Food and local products

The Resende cherry is the product most associated with the municipality: according to the council, it is recognised for its quality and for being the first to reach the market in all of Europe. Regional cooking also highlights roast lamb (anho assado) from a wood-fired oven, served with rice cooked in the meat juices, roast kid, and cavacas de Resende, small sweets made of eggs, flour, water and sugar.

When to go

The Cherry Festival (Festival da Cereja) takes place in the town of Resende over two weekends between late May and early June; in 2026, according to the municipality, it ran on 30–31 May and 6–7 June. Dates change from year to year, so please check them with the Câmara Municipal. The municipal holiday is 29 September and the municipality's patron saint is São João Baptista.

Getting there

We do not give road distances because we could not confirm them in an official source. On its 2026 Cherry Festival page, the municipality mentions Ermida railway station, with a free shuttle to the town centre during the event. For the surrounding area, see also Lamego, Cinfães and Baião.
