Building Mesão Frio…
Mesão Frio in 3D
Mesão Frio is a municipality in the district of Vila Real, in the Douro sub-region, with five parishes and 3,547 inhabitants according to the 2021 Census. It is known as the "Porta do Douro" (Gateway to the Douro): this is where the Douro Demarcated Region geographically begins, and its cultural landscape, the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
The municipality borders Peso da Régua, Lamego, Resende and Baião. If you are looking for terraced vineyards, views of the Douro from above and a quiet base for exploring the region, Mesão Frio makes a fitting starting point.
What to see and do
The municipality promotes a Viewpoints Route with six stops: Barqueiros, Donsumil, Imaginário, Senhora da Piedade, São Silvestre and the Santa Cristina Tower. According to the municipal website, the Imaginário viewpoint, at 145 metres above sea level, works like an amphitheatre over the Douro, with terraced vineyards running down to the river. According to Nosso Território, Donsumil lies at 670 metres and Senhora da Piedade at 430 metres.
The museums listed by the municipality are:
- Casa-Museu do escritor Domingos Monteiro (the house-museum of the writer Domingos Monteiro), at Quinta das Quintãs;
- Centro Interpretativo do Barco Rabelo, in Vila Marim next to the Rede railway station, devoted to the rabelo boats that carried the region's wine to Porto;
- Museu do Triciclo, on Rua Porta do Douro, presented by the municipality as the first tricycle museum in the country;
- Núcleo Interpretativo do Castro de Cidadelhe, at Quinta do Paço de Cidadelhe.
The town's heritage also includes manor houses with coats of arms and churches, among them those of Santa Cristina and São Nicolau.
Food and wine
According to Discover Douro, local cooking includes roast kid, rojões and meat in vinha-d'alhos marinade, and, for dessert, the Biscoitos de Vila Marim. Some wineries offer tastings of Douro and Port wines. Barqueiros is associated with castanhetas, hand-carved wooden instruments once used by Douro boatmen.
Festivities and calendar
The municipal holiday is 30 November, the feast of Santo André, the municipality's patron saint. Discover Douro mentions festivities throughout the year, such as the Feira do Petisco, Vinho e Produtos Regionais and the Festa do Emigrante; please check dates with the municipality.
