Kura: the 50 million euro wellness resort planned for Quinta da Barroca in Armamar

12 Oct 2026

Kura is a five-star wellness resort that Boa Hotels plans to build at Quinta da Barroca in Armamar, with an investment of about 50 million euros, 70 rooms and suites, a spa and around 100 jobs. Opening is expected in 2028 or 2029 depending on the source, and prices have not been announced.

Armamar is set to gain a five-star wellness resort. According to the report published by SAPO (from its partner Travel Magg, citing Jornal de Negócios), the Boa Hotels group will convert Quinta da Barroca, today a three-star rural hotel, into a project called Kura, with an investment of about 50 million euros and around 100 jobs. Here is what is known, what has not yet been announced and what it means for anyone planning to stay in this part of the valley.

What has been announced for Quinta da Barroca

The property is in the Upper Douro, in Armamar, with 26 hectares of vineyards, orchards and hills at about 1,000 metres of altitude, according to the report. The main figures are:

  • Investment: about 50 million euros.
  • Jobs: around 100.
  • Accommodation: 70 rooms and suites, including suites with a hot tub.
  • Later phase: 50 private villas (branded residences), with no set date.
  • Category: five-star wellness resort.

Spa, restaurant and vineyard experiences

The concept is built around wellness. The plan includes a two-storey spa with eight treatment rooms, a hammam, saunas and studios for yoga, pilates and breathwork. There will also be a bar, a locally inspired farm-to-table restaurant and an infinity pool suspended above the valley. The wine side is not forgotten: the project foresees activities linked to the vineyard and winemaking, which ties it to the wine tourism the region is known for.

In February 2025, when the project was first announced, the trade press added that the architecture would be by FAT (Future Architecture Thinking) and the interiors by Ingrid Aparicio of Bacana Studio, the designer behind Village by BOA in Porto.

When it opens and what it will cost

The date is the least clear part. The SAPO headline says 2028, but the body of the text and the Boa Hotels statement say 2029; in 2025 the talk was of winter 2028. On prices, nothing has been released. Until there is official information, treat any date or figure as provisional. The project is still at the announcement stage, so details such as the number of rooms or the facilities may change between now and the opening.

Who is Boa Hotels

The group's first project was Village by Boa, in the former Bairro do Silva in central Porto, which opened in late 2022 as an aparthotel with 40 units and two commercial spaces. The group was launched by the Israelis Lior Zach and George Vinter, who moved to Portugal in 2019. The partnership was dissolved about a year ago and Lior Zach now leads the group alone.

Quinta da Barroca today

While Kura does not exist yet, Quinta da Barroca keeps its page in our guide. On Booking.com it had, on 25 September 2026, a rating of 8.7 out of 10 from more than 900 reviews, and listed two swimming pools, free parking, free wifi, a bar and a good breakfast. The photographs in this article show the current estate, not the future resort. The report does not say whether the property stays open during the works, so always confirm directly before planning a trip.

Where to stay in Armamar in the meantime

Armamar is one of the most interesting bases for vineyards, viewpoints and quiet, without the crowds of Pinhão. If you want an alternative with a pool and views, Vila Galé Douro Vineyards is a larger hotel, and Quinta do Tedo is a wine estate in the same area. What to confirm before you book

  • The official opening date of Kura and whether the current property closes for the works.
  • Prices and cancellation terms, which do not exist yet for the resort.
  • The schedule for the villa phase, which has no date.
  • Whether the spa and restaurant will be open to outside guests and day visitors.
