Quinta do Panascal, property of Fonseca Port (Fladgate Partnership group), is one of the most visited and best-situated estates in the Alto Douro Wine Region. Located in Valença do Douro, Tabuaço municipality, the estate extends over schist slopes with decades-old field-blend vineyards arranged in terraces descending to the southern bank of the Douro.
The Viewpoint and Landscape
The Quinta do Panascal viewpoint provides one of the most representative views of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro (UNESCO) landscape — schist terraces covered in vines descending in steps to the river. The perspective takes in several famous neighbouring estates and the river curve that characterises this stretch of the upper Douro.
Fonseca Port — Visit and Tasting
The estate visit includes a self-guided or guided walk through the vineyards, with interpretive panels on schist geology, the harvest process and Port Wine production. The final tasting features Fonseca Port expressions — Bin 27, Vintage Character, 10-Year-Old Tawny and, in premium packages, declared Vintages. Fonseca Port is one of the oldest Port houses, founded in 1822.
Getting There
Quinta do Panascal is about 25 km south-east of Pinhão via EN222. The road is challenging in places — a vehicle with good suspension is recommended. Private parking on estate. Combine with Barcos Wine Village. Find accommodation in the Douro.
