Pinhão Railway Station

Pinhão

About this Place

Pinhão Railway Station is far more than a train stop — it is an open-air gallery and one of the most photographed icons across the entire Douro Wine Region. Its 24 blue-and-white azulejo tile panels, painted in 1937 by João Couto, narrate scenes of the grape harvest, the transport of Port Wine barrels on rabelo boats, and rural traditions of the valley.

The Douro Line linking Porto to Pocinho is considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Arriving at Pinhão by train — through tunnels and viaducts hugging the river — is itself an unforgettable experience. The station sits in the heart of Pinhão, the gateway to some of the finest quintas of the Alto Douro, including Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Vesúvio and Quinta da Roeda.

After admiring the tiles, explore the riverside village and book a Douro harvest experience or a boat cruise to see the terraced vineyards from the water.
