Sabrosa
Sabrosa: The Douro That Few Know
Sabrosa is one of the Douro Valley's best-kept secrets. This small village in the municipality of Vila Real, set on the plateaus above Pinhão, offers everything travellers look for when they tire of conventional itineraries: century-old terraced vineyards, family wineries with open doors, genuine silence and a landscape that seems frozen in time. And it has, beyond all that, a historical distinction that very few villages in the world can claim: it is the birthplace of Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães), the explorer who led the first circumnavigation of the globe between 1519 and 1522.
The Magellan House
In the centre of Sabrosa, the Casa de Magalhães marks the site where Ferdinand Magellan was born around 1480. The building houses a small museum with replicas of maps and navigation instruments from the Age of Discovery, historical documents about Magellan's life and expedition, and an exhibition about the first circumnavigation of the globe. The square outside has a statue of the explorer.
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, on the hillside above the Douro near the village of Covas do Douro, is one of the Douro's most beautiful and acclaimed wine tourism properties. With 120 hectares of terraced vineyards descending to the river, the estate produces high-quality Douro DOC reds and whites and Port wine. The integrated hotel — an 18th-century manor house sensitively restored — has 22 rooms overlooking the river and vineyards, a spa and outdoor pool. It is probably the most comprehensive luxury wine tourism offer in the Sabrosa/Pinhão area.
The Vineyards and Landscape
The entire territory of Sabrosa falls within the Cima Corgo sub-region, considered the zone producing the finest Vintage Port wines. The schist terraced vineyards, many centuries old, rise and fall on slopes of 30–35 degrees. The view from the viewpoint next to Sabrosa's parish church, overlooking the terraces and the Pinhão valley below, is one of the least known and most beautiful in the entire Douro.
Getting to Sabrosa
By car: From Vila Real, 15 km along mountain road N322. From Pinhão, approximately 8 km up the hillside. From Porto via A4 to Vila Real then N322: total approximately 1h20.
No regular public transport serves Sabrosa — a car is necessary, or alternatively a taxi from Régua or Vila Real.
