Casa de Mateus

Casa de Mateus is one of the finest examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture and an internationally recognised symbol of Portugal — the reflection of its palace in the ornamental lake is the world's most famous wine label, immortalised on Mateus Rosé, sold in over 70 countries. Located 3 km from central Vila Real, the estate is managed by the Casa de Mateus Foundation, which preserves the building, gardens, and a rich artistic and documentary heritage.

The Baroque Palace

Construction of the palace began in the early 18th century, attributed to Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni (1691–1773) — the same master responsible for Porto's Torre dos Clérigos and Igreja da Misericórdia, and the Casa de Freixo in Lamego. The façade, with its unique plasticity and movement within the context of northern Portuguese Baroque, is dominated by two lateral towers, a central balustrade and the famous butterfly-wing staircase. The building was classified as a National Monument in 1911.

The interior, maintained by the foundation much as it was when inhabited by the counts of Vila Real, preserves original 18th-century furniture, porcelain, silverware, illuminated manuscript collections and the counts' libraries — a remarkable testament to Trás-os-Montes aristocratic life.

The Gardens

The formal gardens of Casa de Mateus, designed in Portuguese Baroque style with geometrically clipped box hedges, fountains and a celebrated cypress tunnel over 30 metres long, are unmissable. The foundation organises the Mateus Gastronomy and Wine Festival in June, and outdoor summer concerts in the gardens.

Mateus Rosé and Wine Tourism

Mateus Rosé, produced since 1942, was for decades the world's best-selling Portuguese wine. Beyond the rosé, Quinta de Mateus now produces white and red wines from Touriga Nacional and other varietals. Wine tastings and winery visits are included in some tour packages.
