About this Place

Quinta do Covelo — Wine Tradition in the Heart of Baixo Corgo

Quinta do Covelo is an authentic wine tourism landmark in Mesão Frio, nestled on the gentle slopes of the Baixo Corgo, the northernmost sub-region of the Douro DOC. This family estate preserves centuries of winemaking tradition, producing characterful wines that express the identity of the Douro terroir.

Wines and Terroir

Baixo Corgo is characterised by a stronger Atlantic influence and higher rainfall compared to the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior sub-regions. At Quinta do Covelo, traditional varieties such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca grow on schist terraces, lending the red wines an elegant structure and refreshing acidity. Whites made from Malvasia Fina and Viosinho display remarkable minerality and freshness.

Winery visits allow guests to follow the entire winemaking process, from manual harvesting on steep terraces to barrel ageing. Expert-led tastings offer an educational and sensory experience of great value.

Wine Tourism Experiences

Quinta do Covelo offers guided vineyard and winery tours, accompanied wine tastings and harvest experiences during September and October. The landscape setting is exceptional: terraced vineyards forming a natural amphitheatre overlooking the Douro River create unforgettable views in every season.

The estate is minutes from the centre of Mesão Frio and less than 20 km from Peso da Régua. Browse our Douro accommodation to complete your visit.
