Foz Côa Castle stands on the highest point of the town, commanding the confluence of the River Côa with the Upper Douro. Classified as a National Monument, this medieval castle dates essentially from the 15th century, reinforced by King D. João I after the town was granted to the House of Braganza.
The rectangular keep, irregular perimeter walls with original Gothic gateway and preserved merlons make this one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the Douro Superior region. The castle overlooks the schist valley where prehistoric rock engravings were discovered in 1992. Combine with the Côa Museum (5 minutes on foot) and a guided tour of the Archaeological Park.
