Favaios Cooperative Winery

Favaios Cooperative Winery, founded in 1937, is the sole producer of Moscatel de Favaios with Denominação de Origem Controlada — the only white fortified wine with its own exclusive sub-appellation in the Douro Wine Region. The village of Favaios, in Alijó municipality at 650 metres altitude, is the epicentre of a unique microclimate that favours the Moscatel Galego Branco grape variety.

Moscatel de Favaios

Moscatel de Favaios is a fortified wine made from Moscatel Galego Branco grapes, with fermentation interrupted by the addition of grape spirit (mutage), preserving natural sugars. The result is a golden-coloured wine with intense floral and fruit aromas (orange, peach, orange blossom), sweet but fresh palate, and an alcohol content of 17–20%.

The cooperative brings together over 400 grower members and processes approximately 2,000 tonnes of grapes annually. The most sought-after expressions include the 10-Year Moscatel de Favaios and the Colheita, with wood ageing developing walnut, caramel and dried fruit notes.

Tours and Tastings

The winery tour includes a walk through the winemaking and ageing facilities with a detailed explanation of Moscatel production. The tasting includes at least two expressions. The on-site shop stocks the complete range.
