The Sanctuary of São Salvador do Mundo crowns a hilltop about 5 km from the town of São João da Pesqueira, on the left bank of the Douro. It is considered the largest sanctuary in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro and pairs a centuries-old pilgrimage site with one of the region's most sweeping viewpoints.
History
The sanctuary developed as a set of small chapels climbing the hillside, the oldest dating back to the 16th century. Local tradition credits Friar Gaspar da Piedade, who settled here as a hermit after a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land, with founding the first chapel to house a relic he brought back — a bone attributed to Saint Jerome. Over time, further chapels were added along the ascent, culminating at over 700 metres of altitude.
The Viewpoint
From the top, the panorama sweeps over the Douro River, the Valeira Dam, and a landscape where steep schist slopes give way to vineyard terraces, olive groves and orchards. On clear days the historic Douro railway line is visible far below, running along the riverbank.

The sanctuary and viewpoint are freely accessible, with the site especially lively during its annual pilgrimage.
