The municipality of Sabrosa, at the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region, is the birthplace of one of history's greatest explorers: Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães, c. 1480–1521), the Portuguese navigator who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe, completed in 1522, though he himself did not survive to see the return to Europe.
Ferdinand Magellan — Sabrosa's Navigator
Magellan was born in Sabrosa, at Quinta de Magalhães (or Quinta de Souse, according to some sources), probably between 1480 and 1490. After a military career in the service of the Portuguese Crown — including campaigns in India (Malacca, 1511) and North Africa — he transferred to Spanish service when King Manuel I declined to support his proposal to reach the Spice Islands by sailing westward.
He departed Seville on 20 September 1519 with five ships and around 270 men. He navigated the strait now bearing his name — the Strait of Magellan, at the southern tip of Patagonia — in November 1520, and reached the Philippines in March 1521, where he was killed in the Battle of Mactan on 27 April 1521. The expedition was completed by Sebastián del Cano, who returned to Seville in September 1522 with 18 survivors.
The Magellan Route
The Magellan Route (Rota Fernão de Magalhães) is a heritage and cultural trail through the main sites in Sabrosa connected to the navigator: the presumed birthplace, the Sabrosa Municipal Museum (with a dedicated exhibition), the Parish Church and various monuments and interpretive panels. Was Magellan really the first to circumnavigate the globe?
Magellan led the expedition but died in the Philippines in 1521. The first person to complete the circumnavigation as a crew member from start to finish was Enrique of Malacca, Magellan's enslaved man; del Cano commanded the return. The expedition itself is considered the first circumnavigation in history.
