Lagoaça River Beach
About this Place
Lagoaça River Beach, located in the Douro Superior, Torre de Moncorvo municipality, is one of Portugal's most beautiful and lesser-known river beaches. Set in a remote schist valley, with the Douro's calm, clear waters lapping a fine sandy beach, Lagoaça is the perfect retreat for families, nature lovers and those seeking authenticity away from mass tourism.
The Beach and Activities
The beach has a Blue Flag bathing zone, lifeguard service (during bathing season, generally June–September), changing facilities, a bar/restaurant and picnic area. Douro water temperatures reach pleasant levels in summer (23–25°C). Available activities include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and boat trips.
The surrounding schist and slate landscape is characteristically austere — the hillsides almost bare, a beauty typical of the remotest Douro. On calm days, the reflection of the slopes on the water creates images of almost surreal beauty.
Getting There
Lagoaça is about 20 km north-east of Torre de Moncorvo, accessible via EN219 and then local road. Free parking on site. Combine with Almond Blossom and the Parish Church. Find accommodation in the Douro.
