Douro Internacional Natural Park

Douro Internacional Natural Park spans 85,000 hectares along the Portuguese-Spanish border, encompassing the wildest and most inaccessible stretches of the Douro river and its tributaries the Águeda and Tourões. This cross-border territory — known on the Spanish side as Arribes del Duero — forms one of the most important biodiversity corridors in the Iberian Peninsula, classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive.

The Douro Gorge

The park's most spectacular feature is the Douro Internacional gorge, where the river has carved over millions of years a schist and granite canyon reaching 170 metres in depth. The sheer cliffs, virtually untouched by human activity, provide ideal habitat for cliff-nesting birds. The landscape is of austere and dramatic beauty, especially in spring when Mediterranean vegetation bursts into flower and the river runs full with snowmelt from the Castilian plateau.

Exceptional Wildlife

The park hosts one of Europe's largest colonies of griffon vultures, with hundreds of breeding pairs nesting on the vertical cliffs. Bonelli's eagle, one of the continent's most threatened raptors, regularly uses the park for nesting. The black stork nests in the wooded gorges. The European otter is well established in the park's clean watercourses. There are also historical records of the Iberian lynx, the world's most endangered wild cat, which found one of its last refuges in this region before being virtually extirpated from northern Iberia.

How to Visit

The park has several interpretation centres and waymarked hiking trails with strategically positioned birdwatching hides at the gorge rim. Miranda do Douro serves as the main gateway. The best season for birdwatching is spring (March to June), when birds are in full breeding activity.
