About the Event
On 11 November, Alijó marks its Municipal Day with the traditional Feira de São Martinho, one of the highlights of the autumn calendar in the Douro. The Feira Franca de São Martinho opens at 7am in the village centre, followed at 8am by a lively procession of Zés Pereiros drummers and pipers from the municipality's parishes, filling the streets with music and colour.
Throughout the day, the town fills with the smell of roasted chestnuts and the taste of new wine, in a Gastronomic Exhibition of the Parishes bringing together produce and flavours from across the territory. A traditional magusto (chestnut roast), tastings of bísaro pork and new wine, and tripe for everyone are all part of a free, extensive programme organised by the Alijó Municipal Council together with the parish councils.
More than a fair, São Martinho in Alijó is a celebration of Douro identity — an invitation to sample the gastronomy, crafts and hospitality of one of the oldest wine regions in the world, right when the year's new wine is first tasted.
