The São João Festival Porto 2026 transforms the city into the most vibrant night of the year, on the night from June 23 to 24. Considered the biggest popular festival in northern Portugal and one of the most emblematic in the Iberian Peninsula, São João night fills Porto's streets and bridges with music, joy and basil plants.
Tradition calls for Porto residents to take to the streets armed with leeks or plastic hammers to tap each other on the head, while fireworks and rockets light up the sky above the Douro River. Street parties (arraiais) animate every neighbourhood, from Ribeira to Bonfim, via Foz and Clérigos.
The grand fireworks display takes place over the Douro River at midnight, visible from both banks including Vila Nova de Gaia. The concert on Avenida dos Aliados typically gathers some of Portugal's biggest music stars.
How to Get There
Porto is about 90 km from the Douro wine region. Combine São João with a visit to Douro wine estates and river cruises. Stay at a Douro hotel and come to Porto for the celebration!
