Seeing the Douro from above is essential — the terraces only gain scale when viewed from a viewpoint. But rushing from one viewpoint to another in a single day produces hurried photos and tiring drives. This two-day itinerary starts from the Pinhão area, covers the three most cited viewpoints in the central valley and leaves room for the right light. For general context, cross-reference with our list of unmissable viewpoints of the Douro.

Assumes a rental car (or a taxi hired by the day) and overnight stay in Pinhão or Régua. If coming from Porto, the N222 route to Pinhão is already an attraction — allow time for stops.

Day 1: Galafura and Pinhão

Morning — Pinhão without rushing

Start at the waterfront and the tiled station of Pinhão — Jorge Colaço's panels (1937) visually explain wine-growing life. No ticket needed to see the tiles. If you arrived the night before, dedicate the morning to coffee, a stroll along the riverfront and a relaxed lunch — save energy for the afternoon at the viewpoint.

If you prefer structure, follow the morning of our 1-day Pinhão itinerary until lunch, then pick up here in the afternoon.

3:00 pm — Drive up to São Leonardo de Galafura

Leave Pinhão around 3:00 pm (15–20 minutes by car on a narrow but paved road). The Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura is where Miguel Torga described an excess of nature — the curve of the Douro and Côa in a single panorama. Read more context in the dedicated article on the Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura.

Without a car: round-trip taxi from Pinhão (typically €25–35 negotiated at the pier or station).

5:30 pm — Sunset at Galafura

Stay until after sunset if the weather allows — the warm light on the terraces is the photographic moment that justifies the day. There is parking near the viewpoint; on summer weekends arrive before 5:00 pm to secure a spot.

Evening — Return to Pinhão

Drive down carefully — unlit stretches on the road. Dinner in the centre of Pinhão (reservation advised on Saturdays) and a night in the valley.

Day 2: Casal de Loivos and São Salvador do Mundo

9:30 am — Miradouro de Casal de Loivos

A few minutes from Pinhão (direction São Cristóvão do Douro), the Miradouro de Casal de Loivos offers a classic view over Pinhão, the river and the quintas on the opposite bank — including Quinta do Bomfim. Works well in the morning with rising sun or combined with Galafura the previous day to compare perspectives.

Short stop: 30–45 minutes are enough for photos and thermos coffee if you brought one.

11:00 am — Drive to São Salvador do Mundo

Head northeast towards the Cachão da Valeira — about 40–50 minutes from Pinhão on winding roads. The Santuário e Miradouro de São Salvador do Mundo dominates the gorge where the Douro narrows between schist cliffs — a more dramatic and wild landscape than Galafura.

Midday — Miradouro de São Salvador do Mundo

Park near the sanctuary and walk to the viewpoint. The view of the river squeezed between rocky walls explains why the Cachão was an obstacle to navigation for centuries. Combine with reading our article on the rabelo boat and rapids if you want historical context.

Lunch: bring a picnic or return to Pinhão/Régua — restaurant options near the viewpoint are limited.

Afternoon — Return via the N222 or by train

Options to finish:

  • Return to Porto via the N222 — photo stops along the river; allow 2–3 hours to Régua with breaks.
  • Extra night in Régua — museum, waterfront and Régua itinerary the following day.
  • Train from Pinhão to Porto — if you left the car or came by taxi; check regional schedules on the day. See visiting the Douro without a car to combine train + taxi for day 1 viewpoints.

Mental map of the itinerary

  • Day 1 (afternoon): Pinhão → Galafura (sunset) → Pinhão
  • Day 2 (morning–afternoon): Pinhão → Casal de Loivos → São Salvador do Mundo → return

Short distances on the map, but winding roads — do not underestimate travel times. Three viewpoints in two days leaves room to repeat Galafura if the first afternoon is cloudy.

Practical information

  • Footwear: trainers with good grip — viewpoints have uneven ground and wind.
  • Fuel: fill up in Pinhão or Régua before going to São Salvador — petrol stations are scarce on the route.
  • Best season: May–June and September–October — soft light and tolerable temperatures. August: viewpoints crowded at sunset.
  • Photo gear: wide angle for panoramas; golden hour 60–90 minutes before sunset at Galafura and Casal de Loivos.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many viewpoints can I see in two days?

Three main ones — Galafura, Casal de Loivos and São Salvador do Mundo — with time for quality light. More than that in two days means rushing.

Where should I stay for this itinerary?

Pinhão — central for Galafura and Casal de Loivos; São Salvador is 40–50 minutes by car.

Do I need a car to reach the viewpoints?

Yes, except Galafura and Casal de Loivos accessible by taxi from Pinhão. São Salvador requires a car or dedicated transfer.

What is the best time for photography?

Late afternoon at Galafura and Casal de Loivos; São Salvador works in the morning or afternoon with side light on the Cachão.

Can I combine viewpoints with a quinta visit?

Yes on a longer day (quinta in the morning + viewpoint at dusk), but this two-day itinerary assumes a focus on viewpoints.

Does this itinerary work without a car?

Partially — train to Pinhão + taxi for Galafura and Casal de Loivos. São Salvador is difficult without a car.
